You may need to reistall *buntu.
Are you currently using the LiveUSB?

To upgrade, use

sudo apt upgrade

Which do you want, Thunderbird or Hey?
You can have both, but that may cause other problems.

My first guess solution...
Completely purge the installed email client and install the one you want....

I had similar issue's when I first transitioned to *buntu.
Those issue's were caused by numerous things such as background app's, numerous browser tabs/windows open, growing logs, snap's, etc.

Answering 2 questions will help to locate which command lines you need.

What *buntu are you using? (Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, etc)
What linuxbabe app's do you use?

I had this same issue with spotify.
Turns out that the public key I was using had expired.
I went to spotify's website and obtained the new public key.
